Why do some deer species retain spots as adults?

Biologists have spent a century or more wondering why organisms look the way they do. Two common ideas include camouflage and mate attractiveness.
We thought that the stripes on zebras were intended to confuse predators, disrupt the animal’s silhouette, and even give it an individual identity (no two zebras are alike, at least from the point of view of other zebras).
