The Milwaukee Breweries and the Toronto Blue Jays are two teams that could look like trade partners ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. Milwaukee currently commands the National League Central division, while Toronto sits in last place in the American League East. Since the Brewers need starting pitchers, they could turn to the Blue Jays for the former All-Star who is on an expiring contract.
One former All-Star pitcher could be a trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Given the asking price of starting pitchers Garrett Crochet and Jesus Luzardo is very high, Brewers GM Matt Arnold may look elsewhere to improve his starting rotation. One option he could consider is former All-Star Yusei Kikuchi. The 33-year-old southpaw played in the 2021 mid-summer classic as a member of the Seattle Mariners, but this is the final year of a three-year, $36 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays that puts his 2024 salary at $10 million.
How has Yusei Kikuchi performed this season?
At 33 years vintage, Yusei Kikuchi can still dominate on the pitch. His fastball is averaging 96 mph this season, and he has even more perceived velocity on his heater as he is one of the best pitchers with extension. His season ERA of 3.56 isn’t particularly eye-catching, but he posted an ERA of 2.64 in his first 10 starts of the season, including one outing in which he threw eight innings and two appearances with nine strikeouts.
Milwaukee Brewers – Toronto Blue Jays trade proposal involving Yusei Kikuchi.
If made available, Yusei Kikuchi could be an fascinating trade target for the Brewers to consider, as his asking price will be significantly lower than other lefties such as Garrett Crotchet and Jesus Luzardo. Kikuchi could improve his stock over the next month, but between being a loanee and not being considered one of the top weapons available, a deal involving one of the top 30 prospects may be enough to get a deal done.
