The Milwaukee Breweries this year’s starting rotation was hampered by injuries. As a result, Bryse Wilson was thrown into the net but had plenty of opportunities to struggle in the first round. Manager Pat Murphy tries to remedy this by occasionally using the opener, and this strategy seems to be working.
Bryse Wilson has struggled in the first round of ballgames this year.
In 11 starts, Bryse Wilson allowed seven runs to cross home plate in the first inning this year. As a result, his first-inning ERA is 6.52. When we dig into the stats, his ERA this year as a starting pitcher is 4.75, but as a relief pitcher (opening strategy implemented) his ERA is 2.78.
The Milwaukee Brewers have used openers on days when Bryse Wilson is scheduled to pitch.
A year ago, Bryse Wilson was the Brewers’ unsung hero. That year, he operated out of the bullpen and was able to work multiple innings. This year, he was asked to pitch according to the workload of starting pitchers, but he has been documented to struggle in the first inning. As a result, players like Jared Koenig and, more recently, Hoby Milner have been used as openers on days Wilson was expected to pitch.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Bryse Wilson is the first shortstop since 1987 to achieve this feat.
In his last two relief appearances, Wilson threw 5.2 innings and 6.0 innings (used openers), but they were essentially equivalent starts. The good news is that his first innings problems were erased and as a result he turned in two more incredible relief performances in which he didn’t give up a single run. According to OptaSTATs, he is the first pitcher since 1987 to throw 5+ shutout innings in relief and earn a win.

It will be engaging to see if Pat Murphy leans towards using the opener even more for Bryse Wilson. Between June 15 and 26, he started in a game against the San Diego Padres, where he scored five earned runs. For some reason he seems to throw better when he comes into the game from behind the scenes.
