Milwaukee Brewers fall victim to Paul Skenes, who pitches a record-breaking 7-inning no-hitter

This Milwaukee Breweries lost two of three games to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Thursday afternoon’s contest featured a record-breaking performance by rookie phenom Paul Skenes. Skenes was drafted first overall by the Pirates last year and has been sensational in his first 11 MLB starts. His latest epic performance has put him in elite company.

Paul Skenes was removed from the field against the Milwaukee Brewers after going seven hitless innings.

After throwing seven innings and 99 pitches, the Pirates pulled Paul Skenes from the game despite not getting a single hit. He had struck out 11 Brewers batters and allowed just one walk. Milwaukee kept the game close as Aaron Civale threw 6.1 innings and allowed just one run (in the seventh inning).

Paul Skenes has had several appearances in which he did not allow his opponents to score a single goal.

The Brewers aren’t the first team to fall victim to Paul Skenes’ no-hitter. In Skenes’ second MLB start, he threw six hitless innings against the Chicago Cubs. In that game, he similarly walked just one batter, struck out 11, and had 100 pitches when he was removed from the game.

According to Baseball Reference, no other starting pitcher has had multiple outings consisting of 6+ innings and zero hits allowed. OpaStats additionally indicated that Paul Skenes is the only pitcher in MLB history with multiple outings consisting of zero hits, one or fewer walks, and 10+ strikeouts. Finally, Skenes is only the fourth pitcher since 1893 to have multiple zero-hit games and 10+ strikeouts in a season, the others being Nolan Ryan (1973), Max Scherzer (2015), and Justin Verlander (2022).

Paul Skenes is just 22 years senior and will be under the control of the Pirates for at least the next six years. He will be a grave problem for any team that faces him, not just the Milwaukee Brewers.
