This Milwaukee Breweries will select four players on the first day of the 2024 MLB Draft. They will select on Days 17, 34, 57, and 67 of the draft. Day 1 of the draft will begin on Sunday, July 14 at 6:00 p.m. EST. Here, we take a closer look at the four possible selections, as well as other names under consideration.
Milwaukee Brewers 2024 MLB Draft Projection at 17th: OF/RHP Carson Benge
One of the Brewers’ goals in this draft is to add depth to their minor league outfield. Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick are all in the majors, and Milwaukee has only drafted infielders and pitchers in 2023. Two-way sensation Carson Benge would not only fill an organizational need in the outfield, but he also has some potential as a pitcher. The Oklahoma State University product has posted a 1.109 OPS as a batsman this year, smashing 18 home runs, hitting 24 doubles and stealing 10 bases. As a relief pitcher, he has posted a 3.41 ERA, struck out 44 batters in 37 innings pitched and hit 96 MPH on the radar gun.
Other post-17 options include:
Milwaukee Brewers 2024 MLB Draft Projection at 34th: C Caleb Lomavita
Another position Milwaukee should consider adding to its roster this year is catcher. William Contreras and Jeferson Quero are both under team control for the next few years, but Contreras will hit into his later arbitration years, will be costly, and now is the time for the Brewers to plan accordingly. Caleb Lomavita, who is rated the 33rd overall prospect by MLB Pipeline in this year’s draft, could be that guy. In California, he hit over .300 each of the past two seasons (.316 and .322) and hit 15+ home runs (15 and 16). He’s athletic behind the plate, but he’s still working on the art of receiving and getting rid of the ball quickly.
Other catchers who could be potential candidates at age 34 include:
- Jacob Cozart
- Malcolm Moore
- Jenka Walker
Milwaukee Brewers 2024 MLB Draft Projection at 57th: LHP Carter Holten
MLB Pipeline has six left-handed pitchers ranked between 52nd and 70th overall, and at 57th, we could see the Brewers re-draft Carter Holten. He was selected in the 19th round by Milwaukee in 2021 but opted to pitch at Vanderbilt University. He has thrown 200 innings over three seasons, 251 strikeouts, and a 4.10 ERA. The starting pitcher is consistently playing in the 93-95 MPH range, but has reached 98 MPH and has a 60-grade slider to go with his heat.
Other left-handed throwing options include:
- Dasan Hill
- Bateman from Boston
- Ryan Prager
- Gage’s Jump
- Josh Hartle
Milwaukee Brewers 2024 MLB Draft Projection at 67th: OF Dylan Dreiling
In the case of the Brewers, I predicted on the final day that they would select an outfielder. There should still be plenty of college options available in this part of the draft, and left-handed Dylan Dreiling is one of those who caught my eye. He hit 23 home runs, had 75 RBIs and had an OPS better than 1.000 in each of his two seasons at Tennessee. There are some concerns about his defense, mostly in regards to arm strength, but interestingly, his teammate Kavares Tears could still be on the board at 67th overall, where he is also a left-handed outfielder.
