This Milwaukee Breweries lost to the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Friday night and have lost two consecutive home games for the first time since May 12-13. If they lose one more of their two remaining games before the All-Star break, they will also suffer two consecutive home series losses. It’s been a frustrating start to July, and manager Pat Murphy believes the team is a bit scattered right now.
Freddy Peralta was badly beaten in a game against the Washington Nationals.
On the mound for the Brewers on Friday night was their Opening Day starter Freddy Peralta. His numbers on the mound have been mixed this year, and unfortunately the Nationals beat him. Peralta finished with a career-low 10 hits, threw five innings, gave up four runs and struck out six. His ERA on the season is now 4.11.
Only two Milwaukee Brewers players had hits.
Offensively, the Brewers looked lost against Jackson Rutledge. The Nationals starter struck out six in 4.2 innings, but with a frustratingly wide strike zone, Brewers batters chased pitches all night. Sal Frelick (three hits) and Willy Adames (one hit) were the only players to collect hits, while the rest of the lineup went 0-23.
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy says his team is a bit spread out right now.
After the game, Pat Murphy spoke about the Brewers’ struggles, players returning from injuries and the highly anticipated All-Star break.
“I think we’re at a point in the last few weeks where guys, no matter how much we talk about it, are looking for a break. I think we’re a little disconnected, to be honest.
A few guys have come back from injuries, a few new guys have played and it looks like things have gone against us. But it’s that lull in the action that happens every season and you can’t go back. But you can’t say ‘we’re not going to do anything’ either.
You have to be realistic. Other teams come in and play with freedom, and we don’t play with any freedom.”
-Full quote from Pat Murphy provided by Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Brewers have won just two of their last eight games and have two more games before the All-Star break. Winning those last two games would end the “first half” of the season on a high note. Hopefully, Pat Murphy’s comments will spur the team to a powerful finish.
