Wisconsin Football Considers Signing Standout Defensive Back Marcell Gipson for 2026 Season

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell is shown during a spring football practice Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Badgers football team plays its first game of the season against Western Michigan on Aug. 31.

Over the past few recruiting cycles, the Wisconsin football staff has begun seriously recruiting substantial states like Florida and Texas. Previously, Wisconsin simply offered and recruited the highest-rated and most highly regarded recruits. However, the Wisconsin football staff has now begun digging to find in-state gems in the 2026 recruiting class.

One such gem who has yet to make the rankings is the 2026 defensive back. Marcel Gipson. Gipson is a energetic defensive back who really should be a four-star prospect, if not more, when factored into the majors. The recruit had a lot of attention early on, but State of Oklahoma, Oregon, Be a ladyWisconsin and SMU were the biggest recruiters.

At first, for the Wisconsin staff, recruiting Gipson was all about showing the recruit what the program could do for him in the future. When asked about contacting Wisconsin, Gipson stated, “Grinch definitely reaches out every week, checks in, sends stats about the school, you know, just keeps in touch with me.” Gipson noted that he has been in touch with both Coach Paul Haynes and coach Alex Grinchbut mostly he interacted with the Grinch.

When asked about his feelings about Wisconsin and their program, Gipson stated, “Man, I love the whole status and coaching staff and everything about Wisconsin, to be a real man.” The defender continued, “Some of the coaches up there even know my guys from when they played football, which makes the communication even better and easier.”

For Gipson, communication is something that is needed at the next level to achieve proper success. Speaking about the recruiting process, Gipson stated that he appreciates how the team “communicates and how interested they are” when talking to him. The defender also revealed that the process can be challenging at times, but “…you can tell when someone is a necessity and when you just want them.”

What does the Wisconsin Badgers football coaching staff see in Gipson?

As Gipson has made clear, the Wisconsin football staff is deeply intrigued by what the defensive back has to offer and maintains a very close relationship. Perhaps the biggest tool in Gipson’s bag that Wisconsin loves is his physical play and agile footwork. Catching Gipson off-balance or finding a way to cross him is nearly impossible given his skill set.

Gipson dominated the field last season, and his film shows a defensive back who can read and cover the entire field. The Wisconsin football staff sees Gipson as a defensive back who can cover a variety of receivers.
