First-year Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell entered the 2024 All-Star break with a record of 47-51. After the All-Star break, the Cubs avoided a sweep on Sunday, July 21, by winning the final three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks. During the post-game press conference, Counsell was furious at a reporter’s comments about one of his players.

After the 2-1 victory, the first of the “second half,” ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers asked Craig Counsell specifically about one of Christopher Morel’s at-bats. Morel was thrown out of the game in the seventh inning with a runner in scoring position. Rogers said, “Earlier in the game, some at-bats… In the seventh inning with Morel, there’s a tying run on second base. It looked like he swung it into the lake there. What did you think of some of those at-bats?”
Counsell quickly called out Rogers for his comment about swinging at Lake, responding, “Come on Jesse… Come on. Is that your comment? I think it’s the wrong approach. I think it’s the wrong approach. He’s got a good swing, trying to hit the ball hard. It didn’t work. The pitcher made a good throw. He made an out.”
