Milwaukee Breweries All-Star Christian Yelich is having a great 2024 season. An early-season back injury sidelined him for nearly a month, but he eventually reached the plate threshold and has led the National League in batting average since July 24. Unfortunately, he “may” be looking at another stint on the injured list, as he left Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs early.
Christian Yelich left Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs early in the game.
After rain delayed Tuesday’s first pitch for 85 minutes, the Brewers beat the Cubs 1-0. Rhys Hoskins replaced Christian Yelich in the eighth inning. Yelich’s previous attempt didn’t appear to be running to first base, and it was later revealed he had been removed from the game with a sore back.
Milwaukee Brewers slugger Christian Yelich has a history of back problems.
Recurring bouts of back pain have been a problem for Christian Yelich throughout his career. He previously missed games from April 13 to May 8 in 2024 with a back injury. He didn’t go on the injured list last fall, but did miss games in September with a back injury. Yelich has improved in terms of not playing through early bouts of pain and “catching it early.” While manager Pat Murphy said he “may” be looking at another trip to the injured list, the hope is he won’t be out for an extended period of time.
How will this affect Christian Yelich’s chances of winning another baseball title?
According to MLB.com, to qualify for the batting title, a player must record at least 3.1 plate appearances in a scheduled major league game. 3.1 multiplied by 162 (the total number of regular season games) equals 502 plate appearances. Christian Yelich currently has 315 plate appearances this season. He has 62 games remaining, so he needs approximately 187 plate appearances to qualify at the end of the season.
