The Milwaukee Bucks will be one of the better teams in the NBA for the foreseeable future. As long as Giannis Antequento is a Buck, Milwaukee will always have high expectations.
However, Giannis has made it clear that he will stay in Milwaukee as long as they remain competitive. He wants Milwaukee to keep its foot on the gas when it comes to acquiring talent.
Bucks general manager Jon Horst recently spoke out about making just such a decision.
Milwaukee Bucks General Manager Jon Horst Opens Up About High-Profile Trade
The Milwaukee Bucks acquired All-NBA point guard Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers in a three-team trade last offseason, and there was no doubt at the time that Lillard was interested in leaving Portland. However, Miami Heatwaves were expected to sign him. But that didn’t matter, because Milwaukee ended up getting him to work with former champion and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
In a recent article Elie Degaoui The last word on sports:
While the potential is there, it’s fair to call the Lillard-Antetokounmpo era with the Bucks a bit of a letdown after one season. Regardless, Bucks GM Jon Horst has made it clear he has no regrets about the trade (subscription required).
“We’ve talked about it a little bit in some of the other media sessions that I’ve been on, but I agree. And I don’t apologize for that. I think it’s just the nature of our business. We had an offseason. We built a team, and then we had an incredible opportunity to get an NBA All-75th Anniversary team, a top-75 player, and put him together with another NBA All-75th Anniversary team, a top-75 player at the end of the offseason, and we did that.”
Earlier, in the off-season, Kevin O’Connor from The Ringer it was reported that the Bucks may trade the high player Brook Lopez. O’Connor mentioned that the Bucks were looking to change up their defensive style next season, making Lopez the odd man out. However, Horst recently said he has “no intentions” of trading the 36-year-old.
“Because Brook is so important to us, we have no intention of trading Brook. Of course he’s valuable in the league. That’s his merit. But we haven’t had any real conversations about trading Brook. There are teams that have a lot of value in him and are interested in him. My job is to answer the phone, answer the phone, have the conversations, but Brook has been and will be a big part of who we are. I hope Brook retires as a Milwaukee Bucks.”
Lillard will be 34 years antique throughout the 2024-25 NBA season. He likely has many years of league play ahead of him. Keeping him in the same pairing as Giannis will be huge for this franchise and their chances of winning another NBA championship.
