After three years as a point guard in Miami, Tyler Van Dyke announced he would enter the transfer portal. The quarterback committed to the Wisconsin football program shortly thereafter and has been fighting to regain a spot in the starting lineup ever since. Van Dyke was a prized prospect for the Wisconsin football staff, who believed he offered them a great chance to win the upcoming season.

In the case of Van Dyke, there have been some clear trends throughout his career that have been both positive and negative for the quarterback. Starting with the positive trends throughout his career, Van Dyke has been an extremely precise quarterback with a career-adjusted completion percentage of 73.8%. The adjusted percentage would also take into account drops, giving Van Dyke the benefit of the doubt since he also can’t catch the ball.

However, despite being an precise point guard, Van Dyke doesn’t always throw the best throws, which could be a factor in his drop rate. The point guard has a career drop rate of 6.4%, which measures the number of throws Van Dyke makes on time, on target, and down the field.

Van Dyke improved his throwing percentage to 7.1% during his best college season in 2021, a year in which he also set career highs for yards and touchdowns.

Everyone has something they need to work on, and anyone who says otherwise simply refuses to accept the truth. Every player can continually improve, even at the top of their game, and Van Dyke is no exception.

Regardless of the coordinator’s situation and the different playbooks Van Dyke has had to deal with, there are certain aspects of his game that the quarterback needs to improve on heading into this season. For example, the biggest area the quarterback needs to improve on is plays worthy of turnovers, a up-to-date stat that counts the number of plays in which Van Dyke risked a turnover due to a throwing error or fumble.

While the quarterback avoided many of his pressures that turned into sacks, they often turned into interceptions. Van Dyke had 13 sackable plays last season, 12 of which turned into interceptions. The quarterback finished the year with a 3.5 percent sackable play rate, a consistent rate throughout his collegiate career.

If Van Dyke can improve on that, he will become a better playmaker, and defenses will have to take his ability to avoid pressure into account.
