Milwaukee Brewers check availability of 1 Toronto Blue Jays superstar

This Milwaukee Breweries ultimately adding three pitchers via trade in July (Aaron Civale, Frankie Montas, and Nick Mears), with two of those acquisitions coming just before the July 30 deadline. Despite losing Christian Yelich to a back injury for a significant amount of time, GM Matt Arnold did not add any hitters and cited “letting the kids play” as one of the primary reasons.

After the trade deadline, GM Matt Arnold indicated that they had checked out the availability and costs of several hitters. One of the players he mentioned was Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. During an interaction with Toronto, Arnold allegedly learned for the first time about his manager’s previous comments about Guerrero Jr.

Adam McCalvy, a Brewers reporter for MLB.com, announced on social media that the Toronto Blue Jays had reached out to the Milwaukee Brewers about a possible trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Toronto wanted to know what Milwaukee was willing to offer. It’s unclear how grave the talks were, but Matt Arnold didn’t make a trade and ultimately stuck with his newborn core of hitters.

A few days earlier, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy commented on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s statement:

After the news broke that Christian Yelich would be sidelined for an extended period of time, Brewers manager Pat Murphy spoke to the media about the impact his loss would have on the team and how they planned to address it. He then jokingly said, “What do you suggest we go for Vladimir Guerrero Jr?”

The way Adam McCalvy worded his aforementioned post suggests the Blue Jays took that quote seriously and therefore called the Brewers to explore what they could offer for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The cost of hiring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would be very high.

If a deal were to happen between the Brewers and Blue Jays, the cost to Milwaukee would be high. Guerrero Jr. is on a $19 million salary this season and has one year of arbitration remaining. He is putting together one of his best offensive seasons, a .311/.380/.524 line with 21 home runs and 69 RBI.

Ultimately, the Blue Jays did not trade Guerrero Jr. Toronto also retained star shortstop Bo Bichette.
