When my son Jon and I left the frozen Lake of the Woods after our February ice fishing trip, we vowed to return for the open water season. That happened in September on a trip that established our best fishing yet for us and a few aged and novel friends who joined us.
This time we drove to Gill’s Marina in Morson, Ontario, where Chase Gratton ferried us to Ballard’s Black Island Resort, about six miles up the lake. This was my third trip to the island and my first since 2018. It was Jon’s first trip, but not his last.
