Old Guy couldn’t say it for a while, because, he thought, if he did, if he said it out raucous, it would be reality. Reality would be the problem, with duck season and deer season on the horizon, and after that, next year, turkey season. And in between all that, trout fishing.
But saying it is completely different from thinking it. To begin with, the Old Guy didn’t have to say anything, didn’t have to form the words. But he couldn’t control his thoughts, even if he was at war with them. Even if the thought was painful.
