Wisconsin football is in the second week of fall camp. The season is less than four weeks elderly, and the Badgers are preparing for a 2024 season that will feature a slew of tough games. This fall camp features position battles and players who are poised to break out. Here are three early headlines from Wisconsin football’s fall camp.
Wisconsin football may have its own official quarterback
The Wisconsin football staff said there will be a battle for the quarterback position in fall camp, with redshirt senior Tyler Van Dyke and redshirt sophomore Brayden Locke set to battle it out. Van Dyke is a transfer from Miami (FL), while Locke made three starts for the Badgers last season.
Throughout the entire camp I didn’t feel like it was going to be a massive battle, but feeling after today’s exercises Van Dyke is close to taking over. Media at practice said Van Dyke looked good the last few days and seems to be settling in. I think it would be a problem if Van Dyke didn’t win the position after transferring and using up his last year of college eligibility. That seemed to be his mission all along.
Wisconsin football hopes to have another great rookie running back
I know this may surprise some fans, but Wisconsin football may have found another gem on offense. In particular, freshman Darrion Dupree has a solid start to the fall campMedia representatives at the training session said that his ability to play was a really good start.
At best, Dupree will be the third running back on the depth chart to start the season, but there seems to be a legitimate chance for the true freshman to get significant snaps. With two seniors, Chez Mellusi and Tawee Walker, getting the bulk of the snaps, there is a chance for the newborn back to become a starter next year. Dupree has been one to impress early and often.
The depth and talent on the defensive line appear to be much better than last year.
The depth of the defensive line was a legitimate concern heading into this season. As a result, Fickell entered the transfer portal at the position. He was a defensive lineman who stood out in nearly every practice.
In particular, Brandon Lane, acquired through the transfer portal, had good day in practice today. It sounds like most of his work will be in the second unit, but he has the ability to break into the rotation this year.
I’m sure James Thompson Jr and Curt Neal will secure starting spots on the defensive line, but there are a lot of players who will be fighting for the final starting spot and rotation. This was a great start for a player like Lane.
