Milwaukee Brewers: Jackson Chourio Compared to Current 25-Year-Old Superstar

Milwaukee Breweries 20-year-old rookie Jackson Chourio was compared to many players before he made his massive league debut on Opening Day. Ronald Acuna Jr. was the player most often compared, but now that he has nearly 100 games under his belt in the MLB, another comparison has emerged.

On ESPN Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney said that Jackson Chourio’s success reminds him a lot of Juan Soto. Olney concluded that the success each had immediately at a juvenile age is why Chourio reminds him of Soto. WAR was used as a benchmark for Olney, where Chourio has 2.1 bWAR this year and Soto had 3.0 bWAR in his rookie year.

Juan Soto was much more dominant offensively than Jackson Chourio as a rookie.

In 2018, Juan Soto had a .923 OPS, slugged 22 home runs, collected 70 RBIs, and had a batting average above .300 on all but one day early in the season until mid-August. On the other hand, Jackson Chourio struggled for the first few months of the year, but since June 1, he’s slashed .320/.362/.503 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs.

Jackson Chourio has an advantage over Juan Soto in defense.

Juan Soto was rated as an average outfielder at best during his rookie campaign. If anything, several metrics suggested he was slightly below average. Jackson Chourio is the opposite. As a rookie, he is one of the best outfielders with excellent range. His league-leading defense, combined with league-average offensive numbers (100 OPS+ this year), has resulted in a positive WAR.

All that being said, Buster Olney wanted to say that both Jackson Chourio and Juan Soto have found success as juvenile players in Major League Baseball. Although they have found success in different ways, it is infrequent for top prospects to live up to the hype by climbing the ranks in the minor leagues.
