Milwaukee Bucks GM Reveals Real Motivation Behind Signing Delon Wright

There’s no denying that Gary Trent Jr. stands out as the Milwaukee Bucks’ most critical free agent signing of the summer. After all, it was a huge victory for Milwaukee to land Trent on a minimum contract despite larger offers from opposing teams.

Somewhat overshadowed by the Trent coup is the acquisition of veteran quarterback Delon Wright. General manager Jon Horst has now shed some airy on why Wright was their first acquisition in free agency.

Horst and the Bucks front office had more than a few reasons for hiring Wright, but ultimately it was the 32-year-old’s versatility that made him such a valuable asset to the team.

“Delon just gave us a lot of flexibility. He was not only an early target, was the main goal for us,” Horst said, via Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “Again, credit to Delon, he chose the fit and opportunity above all else. He wanted to contribute to winning, he wanted to be part of a great culture, he wanted to play with people he knew and in a system he thought he could excel in.”

Signing Wright could be the kind of stealth move that could pay off in a massive way for the Bucks, and based on Horst’s comments, it’s clear the team already has a comprehensive plan in place for how Wright will be able to elevate the rest of the team.

“Delon is a really good, versatile player,” Horst continued. “We drafted him because he can start or play two positions, maybe even three. He’s a massive defender. He’s a defense-oriented defender. He’s playoff-proven. … He can play with the ball in the pick-and-roll. He can play without the ball as a catch-and-shoot threat from the 3. He can finish at the rim.

“So for us, Delon’s versatility, who could play in both positions in defence as a starter, as a reserve, just because of his experience, was absolutely obvious. He was high, high on our target list and we were very lucky to get him at an early stage.”

Wright is no star, but he could be the unexpected X-factor that helps Milwaukee succeed in 2024-25.
