The Wisconsin football coaching staff made the decision to allow the versatile quarterback to play at wide receiver during camp.
Nate Whiterunning back known for his hands and ability to catch the ball from deep in the field, has been a repeat receiver for the Wisconsin football team. With depth at running back, Wisconsin believes White could become a versatile receiver used in specific situations. In addition to White’s repeat as a wide receiver, another wide receiver, Priest of Trechahas been named the team’s comeback specialist for the upcoming season.
Wisconsin Football staff gives running back Nate White a chance to play wide receiver
The Wisconsin football staff was open to moving players around at different positions, depending on what they excel at. In the case of running back Nate WhiteWisconsin is testing White at wide receiver during fall camp and giving him a chance to blossom.
White, a Milwaukee native, was recruited to the Wisconsin football program as a four-star running back but had experience playing multiple positions. The recruit played quarterback in his third year and scored 22 touchdowns in the Wildcat offense because he had no other quarterback options. White can run screens, options, bubbles and any real trick Wisconsin can come up with.
However, his versatility extends beyond playing as a running back and quarterback, as Wisconsin believes he can potentially play as a receiver. While White is getting reps as a wide receiver, he has no real technical training as a receiver and will still need to refine the technical side of his game.
Will the Wisconsin Badgers football staff completely convert White to quarterback?
A full conversion to receiver is possible and likely for White, but it’s too early to tell. White has great receiving instincts and skills as a running back, but it will be intriguing to see what he can do at the position. Wide receivers coach Kenny Guiton stated that he is “excited” to have the opportunity to “put his hands on” White during camp.
Guiton also stated that he doesn’t expect White to come out of the gates as a receiver, but is rather interested in what he’s capable of. Wisconsin has thrown the ball to its running backs 54 times out of a possible 469 chances, meaning that the running backs in the Badgers’ offense aren’t necessarily guaranteed receptions.
The running back took a redshirt last season because he didn’t get on the field with multiple players in front of him. Wisconsin added four running backs to the roster before the start of this season and could consider converting White to quarterback if he’s successful in camp.
Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Trech Kekahuna Returns to Punts for Upcoming Season
When asked after the last practice where he did the most reps as a returner, wide receiver, Priest of Trecha confirmed that he will be the Wisconsin football team’s return specialist. Kekahuna is incredibly agile and quick, and his most notable offseason accomplishment was a dunk he threw down in front of offensive coordinator Phil Longo.
Wisconsin had other possible options for returning the points, such as other recipients Tyrell Henry, C.J. WilliamsAND Kyan Berry JohnsonBerry-Johnson, a true freshman, would have to really impress to earn the role, but he had a chance because of his incredible speed and field vision.
