Tom Heberlein has long been trimming two frail trails at the end of his Northwoods Trail forty to provide easier access to deer, grouse, mountain hares and even beavers in the Chequamegon National Forest.
In turn, when visitors emerge from these public forests into the Heberlein area, they do not find a “No Trespassing” sign at the boundary. Instead, they find a clear sign in block letters: “YOU ARE LEAVING THE AMERICAN SECTOR.” The same message is repeated below in Russian, French, and German.
