For every action there’s a reaction. As Outdoor News previously reported, the 2022 class of cisco in Lake Superior was a class for the ages. Biologists now say it could double the previous record set in 1984. And predators in the lake are feasting on those fatty, oily baits, which now measure about 6 inches long.
“This year class of cisco — the 2022 year class — is what all these salmon are feeding on, and that’s why we’re seeing salmon that look like Lake Michigan salmon,” said Cory Goldsworthy, DNR Lake Superior fisheries supervisor in Duluth, Minnesota.
Salmon — both king and kisch — have grown larger than usual in Lake Superior this season, and the icy water has kept them in the Duluth area, where they are within reach of many charter anglers.
