He has only failed to cover at least five innings once this year. Overall, he has positioned himself well to receive a huge payday this winter.

Among the Cubs pitchers, Kyle Hendricks is the only impending free agent. Jameson Taillon is under contract through the 2026 season, Shota Imanaga is under contract through 2025, and Justin Steele, Javier Assad, Jordan Wicks and Hayden Wesneski are all in their arbitration or pre-arbitration years. Adding Burnes to this group of talented arms would give them a starting rotation that would be very high up on the league’s roster.
