It was another great night for the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, as they opened a three-game series at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 3-2 victory thanks to sturdy play on the court, especially from starter Frankie Montas.
Montas, 31, took the mound seriously because he wanted to send a sturdy message with his pitches, something that Brewers catcher William Contreras, who had a great game himself, noticed. Contreras said he passed on his thoughts about Montas’ aggressiveness, which he noted caused the pitcher’s arm to become slightly tired.
Via Associated Press (source: ESPN):
Contreras, who was behind the plate for Milwaukee, said Montas was aggressive.
“He attacked the zone,” Contreras said through an interpreter. “I think a little bit late, maybe he got a little tired and got away from it a little bit, but we talked on the bench to do what he did the whole game, stay aggressive, attack the zone, and yeah, he did everything.”
Montas left the mound after seven innings of fantastic work, allowing zero runs and only one hit with a walk and three punchouts in just 89 pitches. The Brewers leaned on Nick Mears after Montas’ night ended and it nearly turned into a complete disaster. Mears allowed two earned runs in just 0.2 innings, cutting Milwaukee’s lead to a run. Jared Koenig helped put out the fire, ending the eighth inning with a strikeout by Tommy Pham.
In the ninth inning, Devin Williams allowed two hits but held the Cardinals to no runs and struck out three players to secure the win.
