If Devin Williams had been as effective on the mound Wednesday night as he usually is, the Milwaukee Brewers likely would be on the verge of sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals right now. Williams struggled mightily in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, allowing the Cardinals to close a two-run deficit before St. Louis closed it out with a game-winning home run by Nolan Arenado in the 10th.
Despite the indigent performance, Williams still enjoyed the respect of manager Pat Murphy, who was ejected from the contest in the ninth round for an argument.
“He’s one of the best in the game,” Murphy said of Williams. “It happens and he clearly didn’t get a lot of help,” per Joe Harris of the Associated Press.
Williams allowed two runs and three walks on 31 pitches in 0.2 innings. Trevor Megill was called upon to replace Williams on the mound, but that did not prove to be a good decision for the Brewers, as he allowed two walks before allowing Aronado to hit a grounder off him for the winning home run to put the Cardinals up 10-6.
The loss to the Cards was only the Brewers’ first in seven games. Williams’ blown save was also his first of the season.
Milwaukee will try to bounce back Thursday in the series finale at Busch Stadium. The Brewers will return Freddy Peralta as the starter, while the Cardinals will put Milles Mikolas on the rubber.
After their series with St. Louis, the Brewers will head to the West Coast for a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
