Most hunters imagine perfect spots or close washes followed by quick, lightning-fast shots at birds they can clearly see. In the real world, although birds can take to the air at close range, there’s no guarantee their flight path will take them on a journey that will allow your rifle scope to find them.
Many birds, both ruffs and woodcocks, make it through the first roll unscathed. That doesn’t mean they’re out of the game, but the second roll needs to be done in a way that gives you the best chance of another close call. There’s more to it than many hunters realize.
