The bullpen hasn’t been all that effective lately for the Milwaukee Brewers, who once again shot themselves in the foot with penniless pitching on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, particularly reliever Nick Mears. The game was scoreless until Mears came on in the seventh inning.
After Tommy Pham singled, Mears allowed a single to Victor Scott and another single to Masyn Winn. Mears then gave up a run-scoring single to Alec Burleson. After Mears gave up a bases-loaded walk to Willson Contreras, the Cardinals got another run off Winn. Mears’ night ended after he was replaced by Bryse Wilson.
Mears allowed Contreras a walk on a 3-2 count even though the pitcher had a 2-0 lead.
Following the 3-0 loss to the Cardinals, Mears shared his thoughts on the Contreras matchup and admitted he needs to improve.
“I think I might have given up a little bit after that proven swing,” Mears said after the game, according to the Associated Press (source: ESPN). “I thought he was gone, but I ended up going out there to throw. Maybe I got carried away by the moment. I have to get better at this. At this level, if you’re not improving, you’re not getting better.”
Mears began his 2024 MLB regular season campaign with the Colorado Rockies before being traded to the Brewers at the deadline last July for Bradley Blalock and Yujanyer Herrera. In 11 appearances for the Brewers, Mears posted just a 6.75 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 10.2 innings.
