Don’t Have a Dog? Here’s How to Still Get a Capercaillie

Minnesota’s most popular game bird, the wood grouse, was recently targeted by as many as 90,000 hunters, and spring surveys by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) indicate that those who take to the woods this fall will once again have a chance to bag a good number of wood grouse.
Because the capercaillie is adept at avoiding detection, most hunters operate a dog trained to find and follow the scent, point out or scare the bird, and bring the kill to their hand. However, not everyone has a reliable companion, and those who hunt without a four-legged partner must adopt other strategies to be successful.
