Orange is still the color associated with deer hunting season, but gray is a solid second. Gray, as in the beard and hair color of aging hunters.
Jeff Pritzl, a deer hunting program specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), said the agency began collecting data on the age of deer hunters in 2005. At the time, age 43 was the year with the highest hunter age. Last year, it was age 60. He said that in five years, age 65 will likely be the year with the highest hunter age.
“This isn’t something unique to Wisconsin,” Pritzl said. “Especially the eastern whitetail states. This just shows the baby boom generation washing ashore.”
