The Milwaukee Brewers shocked Major League Baseball and the national media by winning 93 games and capturing the 2024 National League Central Division title. When Craig Counsell, the winningest manager in franchise history, left his hometown team and became the league’s leader Chicago Cubsmany wrote off the Brewers. The decision to hire Pat Murphy as the next manager was also met with much criticism.
But less than a year later, the Brewers are in great shape. Not only did the Cubs finish 83-79 and third in the league, but Murphy won NL Manager of the Year honors in his first season at the helm, something neither Counsell nor any other manager in franchise history could accomplish.
Craig Counsell hired his former first base coach from the Milwaukee Brewers
Perhaps it’s no surprise that after a disappointing first season in Chicago, Counsell is turning to some of his former coaches from his time in Milwaukee for facilitate. In delayed October, it was announced that Quintin Berry was leaving the Brewers to become Counsell’s third base coach.
Berry has been a member of Milwaukee’s coaching staff since he retired as a player in November 2018. In 2021, he took over as the Brewers’ first base coach and served in that role for four seasons.
Of course, Counsell was the Brewers’ manager when Berry was hired.
Interestingly, Berry, who only played 132 games in five Major League seasons, played for both the Brewers and Cubs at various points in his career. He was a member of the Chicago organization in 2015 and Milwaukee in 2017-18.
Craig Counsell hired former Milwaukee Brewers hitting coach Andy Haines
Apparently the general counsel isn’t done adding some of his former Brewers coaches to his Cubs staff. Earlier this week it was reported that he also hired former Milwaukee hitting coach Andy Haines on his staff:
Jesse Rogers announced on the radio that Andy Haines – former hitting coach for the Cubs, Brewers (under Craig Counsell) and Pirates – was returning to the Cubs, but his position was not yet known.
As you can see from this quote from Bleacher NationIt is not yet known what role Haines will play on Counsell’s coaching staff in 2025. He served as the Brewers’ hitting coach from 2019-2021. He previously was the Cubs’ offensive coach in 2018.
Haines has just been fired as the offensive coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates, with whom he has been training since 2022.
