Stocking a up-to-date species of fish in a lake can change it forever, especially if the stocked fish begin to breed. In such scenarios, it may never be possible to get rid of this up-to-date species. We have observed this problem in some lakes due to (allegedly) illegal stocking of northern pike.
However, fisheries scientists have found a way to stock “triploid” fish, which will only stay in the water body temporarily.
