Beethoven x3 – 99th season of the Madison Symphony Orchestra

The Madison Symphony Orchestra’s (MSO) January program “Beethoven x3” proves that great things come in threes. Music director John DeMain leads the MSO’s presentation of three Beethoven masterpieces, all composed approximately three years apart. After a dramatic performance of Leonore’s Third Overture, this extraordinary concert brings together an outstanding trio of soloists. Violinist Gil Shaham, his sister, pianist Orli Shaham, and cellist extraordinaire Sterling Elliott come together to play Beethoven’s too rarely performed “Triple Concerto.” As John DeMain said, “Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is a thrilling tour de force for three titans of their instruments.” This concert ends emotionally with Beethoven’s wonderful Second Symphony, an early but groundbreaking work written as he began to realize that he was losing his hearing.

Performances of “Beethoven x3” will take place on Friday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Overture Hall at 201 State Street.
