Bike is the cycling capital of America

As an outdoor recreation destination, Sparta offers historic biking trails, a fishing paradise, and miles of kayaking and paddling adventures. There really is something for everyone in Sparta.

Sparta Wisconsin is the biking capital of America. The Elroy-Sparta bike trail remains one of the most popular trails in the country. With three rock tunnels and five petite towns along its 52-mile route, this rail-to-trail conversion is a favorite among Wisconsin cyclists. Don’t forget a flashlight for your journey through the tunnels.

The 22-mile La Crosse River State Trail was built on the abandoned Chicago and Northwestern Railroad connecting Sparta and La Crosse. The trail is open to walkers and cyclists from spring to fall, and for snowmobiles in winter. Packed limestone sieves provide a glossy surface for cycling. Mileage markers are posted every half-mile on the seven-mile stretch between La Crosse and West Salem. The scenery is a prairie with patches of farmland, forests and wetlands. The roads less traveled are also great cycling experiences.
