Colby’s Flower Shop since 1969. It has been a valued part of the community, starting as a petite family business. Today, under the leadership of Heather Colby, it continues the legacy of bringing beauty and joy to life’s special moments. Learn more about Colby’s Florist and how the team is preparing to deliver hundreds of Valentine’s Day bouquets on February 14.
A family tradition rooted in the values of a petite town
Heather’s journey with Colby began when she married into the Colby family and learned the intricacies of the flower industry. After her mother-in-law retired, Heather took over the business while her husband, Gary, traveled frequently for work. This role gave her the flexibility to balance family and work – a perfect fit for their lifestyle.
Growing up on a dairy farm and digging in Foster instilled in Heather the values of difficult work and community. These rules guide everything done in Flory’s Florist. The Colby family, including their two children, Grant and Halle, remain deeply connected to these roots.
Where do Valentine’s Day bouquets come from?
The Colby family considers themselves very blessed to get to know their customers personally. Because they grew up and lived in this community, they attended many events in their lives – weddings, anniversaries, births, birthdays, prom, retirement and funerals.
The flowers come from trusted suppliers such as Krueger WholesaleIN Sparta Floral & Greenhouse in Wisconsin and Linen Busch Roses in Minnesota. These partnerships provide a wide range of high quality, fresh flowers all year round, sustainably sourced from all over the world.
How do flower shops prepare for Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest seasons at Colby’s. Planning begins in December when flowers, vases, ribbons and decorations are organized in advance. Staff will triple in size to meet increased demand for orders and deliveries. Red roses, the quintessential symbol of love, remain a favorite, alongside mixed arrangements personalized with stuffed animals and candy.
The team creates over 500 bows and designs unique arrangements for Valentine’s Day unusual gifts. For those looking for something different, “Candy Bokays” offers a inventive twist. Inspired by Agnes Colby’s playful spelling of “bouquet,” this sweet tradition continues to delight customers. She would place ads with this selective spelling to see who would notice the mistake.
Tips for keeping your Valentine’s Day bouquets fresh
To extend the life of your flowers:
- Change the water every few days.
- Add flower food and recover the stems with floral crumbs (household scissors can damage the stems).
- Keep the flowers away from direct sunlight and display them in a frigid area.
More than just Valentine’s Day bouquets
Colby florist offers more than floral arrangements. The boutique features women’s clothing, accessories, Bemis Bluff wine, Logterman Honey and other local products. The Kodak Photo Kiosk is also available for printing cherished memories, making it a one-stop shop for thoughtful gifts.
Why shop local
Supporting local businesses strengthens the community by circulating money in the local economy. Shopping at Colby’s Florist doesn’t just mean buying a gift – it means supporting family and a tradition of heartfelt service.
