Colin Rea opens up about being released by the Milwaukee Brewers and the current interest in free agents

For two seasons, Colin Rea was a reliable contributor to the Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff. However, towards the end of the 2024 season, he seemed to be running out of steam and was left out of the playoff squad. Early in the offseason, he was released and eventually became a free agent. Lately, Rea discussed his departure from the organization and shared his observations about the interest he is currently receiving from other organizations.

Colin Rea has earned a spot in the Brewers’ lineup after reviving his career overseas. In 2023, he pitched 124.2 innings in 26 games (22 starts), finishing with an ERA of 4.55. The following year he made 32 appearances (27 starts) in which he pitched 167.2 innings with an ERA of 4.29. Rea was arguably one of the Brewers’ most consistent starters in the first half of the 2024 season, posting a 3.77 ERA in 105 innings. However, his performance deteriorated in the second half as he finished the season with a 5.17 ERA over 67.2 innings.

In November, Colin Rea was released and all 29 remaining clubs opted out of exercising his $5.5 million club option. As a result, he became a free agent. Rea recently told a local news outlet in Iowa that the news initially surprised him, but he uses it as motivation for the future.

“I think it was just time for them to move on. I was a little shocked at first, but you know, when you sit down and think about it, you can put yourself in their shoes. It is what it is. Sometimes that’s just the way the game is, but a little extra motivation never hurts.

“It gives me something extra in my mind. Sometimes you need that little extra to get things going. You look in the mirror, put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself what happened. I have to look at it from all sides. Not everything was great. There is always something to improve and become better, and that extra motivation helps.”

When asked about the current level of interest from MLB teams, Colin Rea was very candid. He revealed that the process has been snail-paced, that the teams have made contact and that other organizations are likely waiting to see what happens before bringing him back to attention.

“It was more like teams reaching out to me and saying they were interested, but nothing happened. It’s more like they want to do something else first, but they want us to know they’re interested. They’ll say, “If things start to develop on other teams, let us know.”

Given Rei’s reliability and durability over the last two seasons, it seems very likely that he will sign an MLB contract sometime in 2025. For now, he just needs to be patient and wait for the opportunity to come his way.
