First baseman Spencer Torkelson has a future that is in doubt as a member of the Detroit Tigers as the team recently signed a contract Gleyber Torres signed a one-year deal for $15 million. GM Scott Harris then announced that outfielder Colt Kieth would move to first base. This makes the former No. 1 overall pick select Torkelson as a freak and a possible trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Spencer Torkelson had mixed results in the MLB as a member of the Detroit Tigers
After being selected first overall in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Arizona State University, Spencer Torkelson wasted no time in making his 2022 debut, but he hit just .203/.285 in his rookie season in 110 games. /0.319. He broke out a year later, smashing 31 home runs and collecting 94 RBI, but struggled again last year. In three seasons, the 25-year-old has a career slash line of .221/.300/.392. Defensively, he hasn’t excelled as Fangraphs gives him a career -9 outs above average (OAA), including -7 OAA during his 2023 campaign.
What is Spencer Torkelson’s trade value?
Giving up the former No. 1 pick won’t come affordable, but aside from his destitute attacking performance a season ago and generally negative defensive play, there’s one notable factor to keep an eye on when assessing his value. The fact is that he only has one minor league option left, making 2025 a critical, almost make-or-break year for whichever team he plays for next season. While he won’t be eligible for arbitration until 2026 and will theoretically remain under team control until 2029, much of his future depends on his performance in the upcoming season.
Would Spencer Torkelson be a good fit for the Milwaukee Brewers?
The Brewers are currently entering the 2025 season with Rhys Hoskins as their starting first baseman. He’s coming off a season where he set many fresh career lows, but he still has the potential to bounce back. Adding Spencer Torkelson could work and provide some cordial competition between the two, but Torkelson’s defensive profile and lack of minor league options could ultimately be the two main factors that determine whether the Brew Crew will want to pursue him via trade or not.
