Could the Milwaukee Brewers get an ace from the 2023 World Series champions?

It’s no secret that Milwaukee Breweries they need starting pitchers. Even considering the overall frail National League this year, including the Central Division, if they want to maintain a comfortable lead, they may need to add outside players soon, as the need to address starting pitching depth is rather pressing. Otherwise, internally, they will rely on the potential performance of Carlos Rodriguez or on players such as Jakob Junis, Joe Ross, Taylor Clark, DL Hall and Robert Gasser who will return from injury in the near future.

It will be compelling to see how Milwaukee chooses to address their current starting pitcher shortage, but if you look further ahead and towards the playoffs, there is another aspect of their starting rotation that needs to be addressed. The reason is the lack of starting pitchers who could take control of the game.

With Corbin Burnes no longer with the organization and Brandon Woodruff sidelined through the 2024 season, Freddy Peralta has taken over as the Brewers’ No. 1 pitcher. He was their Opening Day starter this year and if the playoffs started today, he would likely be their starting pitcher. After Peralta, there is no clear hierarchy of starting pitchers.

While Peralta has been one of the best strikeout pitchers in the league this year (92-7th overall) and is capable of taking over games, his ERA over his last five starts has also been 4.50 and has been at risk of not pitching very well many situations. innings. Milwaukee is currently missing another starting pitcher with an ace, and a playoff featuring more than one of those starters could be the difference in the series.

The Brewers have been linked to a pair of top starting pitchers.

MLB insiders and analysts have already determined that Milwaukee would be an excellent fit for top trade candidates for pitchers Garrett Crochet (Chicago White Sox) and Jesus Luzardo (Miami Marlins). Both will be controllable after the 2024 season and will be costly to the acquiring organization.

Could the Milwaukee Brewers acquire an ace from the 2023 World Series champion Texas Rangers?

In the American League West division, the 2023 World Series champion Texas Rangers are currently three games under .500 and part of a group of teams consisting of .500 or below competing for the third and final wild card spot. Injuries have been a major factor in the Rangers’ struggles this year, but if they can’t put themselves in a buyer’s position at the trade deadline, they could ask an impending free agent starting pitcher if he would waive his no-trade clause in order to go to a contender.

The player in question is Max Scherzer. He waived his no-trade clause last year to leave the New York Mets and join the Rangers. New York only received one prospect in return and also paid out a huge portion of his remaining salary. Scherzer currently owes $22.5 million to the Rangers this year.

As of today, Scherzer is still undergoing rehabilitation after lumbar spine surgery. He had some trouble recovering due to nerve problems. If he recovers or shows that he is close to full health before the trade deadline, he will be a major asset to any contending team in the postseason.

Over the next seven weeks, it will be worth monitoring how the Rangers perform as a team, how Scherzer’s rehabilitation is going and whether his name comes up in trade talks. Between the end of the operation and the loan, his acquisition cost will not be as high as that of Crochet or Luzardo.

If possible, the massive question will be whether he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to move to Milwaukee, or whether he would prefer a team playing in a larger market. From the Brewers’ perspective, signing him seems like a long shot, but a robust Scherzer is exactly what the team needs to get ready for the postseason.
