The entire route spans 3,000 miles through 10 states, and our 250-mile stretch takes us through 33 historic Wisconsin towns. Each town has a affluent history and unique features, from scenic overlooks to outstanding restaurants and meaningful family activities. Here are a few places you can’t miss along the way.
Cross
This lively college town is beloved by more than just students for its breathtaking views of the Mississippi and culinary delights. For a bird’s eye view of the city, drive or hike to popular Grandad Bluff Park and admire the fantastic views from above.
After your outdoor adventures, share some tapas at 4 Sisters Wine Bar & Tapas Restaurant. From grilled cheese dips to Ahi tuna bites, there’s plenty to share with friends at this veteran, woman-owned restaurant overlooking the river.
For a small-town feel within the city, visit The Pearl, an ice cream and pastry shop in one of the city’s oldest buildings. Try one of their handmade flavors, like Snappin’ Turtle or Banana Blondie.
To enjoy the nightlife, order a latte or craft cocktail from Base Note and see local artists on their intimate stage.
Bagley
Have you ever been to one of the oldest state parks in Wisconsin? Wyalusing State Park in Bagley has breathtaking views and hikes that are great for the whole family – it’s an oldie but a goodie. There are plenty of picnic areas so you can relax and enjoy the frosty air while having lunch with a view. You’ll love camping here and enjoying a cozy campfire with your family after a day exploring the archaic effigy mounds.
Stockholm
Who wants to do a little shopping in one of the oldest cities in Wisconsin? Stockholm has many unique compact businesses to discover, including Scandihoo – artisan products with a Scandinavian touch.
Shopping isn’t the only thing Stockholm is celebrated for – this place is all about adventure Maiden Rock Bluff State Natural AreaThis 400-foot limestone cliff overlooks comprehensive Lake Pepin and is one of only six cliffs on the Mississippi River where peregrine falcons nest.

Trempealeau
Time for a photo op! Trempealeau (French for “to plunge into the water”) is a great place to snap some profile shots on the historic Main Street or against the backdrop of the river views. For a more natural escape, head to nearby Perrot State Park for lovely views of the Mississippi River.

A brief drive in Alma is Buena Vista Park Overlook, a natural balcony overlooking the Mississippi. It’s the perfect place to relax and watch barges sail around the sand islands and through Lock and Dam 4, and admire the wildlife that calls the river home.
