Former Milwaukee Brewers fan favorite tries to return to MLB as reliever; video of his 97 mph throw goes viral

This Milwaukee Breweries and other organizations have seen position players transition to pitchers in the past. Former Brewers second-round draft pick Lucas Erceg effectively saved his career by doing so and is now a key member of the Oakland Athletics bullpen. David Fletcher, who was a position player for the Los Angeles Angels from 2018-2023, began pitching this year as a member of the Atlanta Braves organization.

In a recent development, the former Milwaukee Brewers fan favorite and Tampa Bay Rays World Series hero made his first appearance as a pitcher, attempting to one day return to Major League Baseball. That player is Brett Phillips.

On Monday, July 29, a video surfaced online of Brett Phillips throwing a 97-mile-per-hour ball during a National Baseball Congress World Series game. The league is mostly college-age, but it was Phillips’ debut as a pitcher. He pitched one inning (a throwout) as planned and now has his eyes on pitching in a professional league outside of affiliated baseball.

Brett Phillips has been training with a throwing coach in Texas since his release from prison earlier this year.

Brett Phillips was released by the Chicago White Sox in May of this year, but has since been working with a pitching coach in Texas. The Wichita Eagle reported that the following quote from Brett Phillips: “It wasn’t something I prepared for in a week. I put a lot of good work into it. It was a thoughtful process and something I really want to continue and feel like I can still make a difference at the big league level.”

In previous years, Brett Phillips became popular for throwing 45 mph balls to batters during Major League Baseball games.

Brett Phillips has had some devastating substantial league pitching appearances in 2021, 2022, and 2023. At the time, he was must-see TV for throwing 45-mile-per-hour balls to batters, but he became popular for his great defensive performance with the Tampa Bay Rays. Now, things have changed dramatically, as he is, as mentioned, solemn about trying to make a comeback as a pitcher.
