His playing career never panned out, and he tried his hand as a two-way player in 2021, transitioned to full-time pitcher in 2022, and played in the large leagues as a reliever in 2023. In 2023, the Brewers traded Lucas Erceg to the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations. Erceg didn’t have a clear path to the large leagues with Milwaukee, but he got an immediate shot in Oakland and made his MLB debut in May of that year. He posted a 4.75 ERA in 55.0 innings pitched in 2023 and a 3.68 ERA in 2024 (36.2 innings pitched) before being traded to the Kansas City Royals. The Royals gave up three prospects: RHP Will Klein, RHP Mason Barnett and OF Jared Dickey to acquire Erceg.

With the Kansas City Royals, Lucas Erceg has not allowed a single run in 10.1 innings over nine appearances. In that time, he has struck out 14 batters, allowed just four hits and given up no walks. With the Royals fighting for a postseason spot, Erceg will play a large role in how the 2024 season will play out.
