The Manitowoc Lutheran girls volleyball team made school history Saturday at the Resch Center.
They bring home their first WIAA title in any sport, defeating Regis 3-2 (29-27, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12) in the Division 4 title game.
After three sets, the Lancers were down 2-1, but they recovered and won. Head coach Lacey Behnke was proud of her team’s determination.
“There were moments in this game where things weren’t going our way and the girls were just looking at each other and leaning on each other to build each other up,” Behnke said. “I’m just cheerful they never gave up. Our team has a word called ‘courage’ and I think they showed that today.”
Behnke appreciated her entire team, no matter how big or small the role they played. Everyone helped them end the year with the golden ball. Sophomore Ava Stuebs shined when the lights were brightest, making a kill at the end of the game and finishing with a whopping 33 kills to help her team win.
“She is very energetic. Have you seen her jumping through the ceiling? She has been a very vocal leader for us this year. She helped build the team when they were losing. Overall, she’s just an amazing young lady, just like everyone else.”
