Sunday’s battle between the Green Bay Packers and Lions will be one for the ages as they face off at 3:25 p.m. Here are two of the top teams in the NFC North ready to face off in a head-to-head clash that has major implications for the division standings.
The Packers were close to tying the game 30-27 won against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week despite quarterback Jordan Love leaving with a groin injury. Detroit blew out the Tennessee Titans 52-14 and lead the NFC North with a 6-1 record.
Here are three matchups worth paying attention to:
QB Jared Goff vs. the Packers defense
Jared Goff, quarterback of the Detroit Lions, has been a mighty candidate for MVP so far this season. He only threw for 85 passing yards against the Titans, but Goff did it 1695 passing yards 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season. Over the last five games, he has an 83.0% completion rate and a passer rating of 146.5.
The Packers defense was mighty in forcing turnovers, leading the league 19 per season. When this secondary is well, it will likely rank among the best in football, with elite cornerback Xavier Mckinney and All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. This unit will be put to the test on Sunday alongside the Lions’ high-powered units.
RB Josh Jacobs vs. David Montgomery and Jamyr Gibbs
Packers running back had Josh Jacobs 25 carries a 127 rushing yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars. Jacobs ranks 4th in the NFL in rushing 667 yards. His 667 rushing yards were the best for a Packer in eight games since the return of Ahman Green, who had 719 yards in eight games in 2004.
The Lions improved to 8-0 when David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs each scored one TD in the same game. They become the first RB duo in NFL history to have at least 1,500 scrimmage yards and 15 scrimmage TDs in the tandem’s first 20 games. TE Tucker Kraft vs. Sam LaPorta
Packers Tight End Tucker Kraft is one of the elite players in the league. Currently sitting 1 at the ESPN yard after assessing the catch. Since 2020, only Bengals wingers Ja’Marr Chase and Deebo Samuel have posted better results.
Last week, Detroit quarterback Sam LaPorta had as many receptions as he had in his last three games combined. He caught everyone six your goals for 48 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass from running back David Montgomery. His improved appearance should continue for another week without winger Jamison Williams.
