“You won’t save much money,” advised me from an elderly friend who long ago convinced me to load ammunition by hand for fun and self-satisfaction. His comment regarding the economic benefits of this activity was therefore correct, as factory ammunition was inexpensive and available in huge quantities in the slow 1980s.
Another friend recently asked me to keep my eyes peeled for a particular ammunition he was having difficulty finding on store shelves. While looking through several stores’ inventory, I learned that many of the cartridges were out of stock and the prices were higher than I expected. The discovery led me to investigate whether hand-loading ammunition currently provides significant savings. My suspicions turned out to be correct, but what had changed?
