‘He didn’t get the deal he wanted’: Pat Murphy puts conditions on Willy Adames and the Milwaukee Brewers reunion

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy believes there is only one way Willy Adames can decide to return to the team. Now a free agent, other teams can offer Adames long-term contracts. The Brewers may make him an offer, but it appears they won’t be willing to engage in competition for the type of contract Adames wants.

Since joining the Milwaukee Brewers in a surprise trade in mid-May 2021, Adames has won the hearts of his fans. For the past few years, former Tampa Bay backup Ray has been a leader for Milwaukee on and off the field. The Brewers retained Adames on their roster due to his leadership and the fact that he has been instrumental in the team’s success despite receiving trade interests over the past few years.

Pat Murphy was recently a guest on the Foul Territory podcast. When asked if the Brewers wanted Adames back, Murphy replied: “I don’t think it makes sense.”

“If he (Adames) comes back, it means he didn’t sign the contract he expected,” the Brewers manager said. “I don’t even think about it, honestly, because he’ll get what he wants.”

Pat Murphy really wants Willy Adames back with the Brewers

Willy Adames will reportedly be looking for a $200 million contract in free agency and will likely receive at least $150 million on his next contract. The Brewers are not willing to re-sign him to this deal because they have already found his replacement as a reliever.

Even though Pat Murphy has said there’s no point in bringing Adames back to the team, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want him back; rather, he simply reflected on reality. In fact, the Brewers manager praised Adames, saying he was a great guy to have on the team.

Some Brewers fans may be holding out hope that Adames will re-sign with the Brewers, but even Pat Murphy doesn’t see that as a possibility unless Adames, for some reason, doesn’t get the huge contract he’s looking for. The Brewers’ only hope of bringing Adames back to the team is if the market for Adames collapses, forcing him to accept a one-year contract with the team similar to a qualifying offer.

Pat Murphy believes Willy Adames will get the contract he wants. That’s why the Brewers manager also believes their former shortstop won’t be back, no matter how much he or anyone else wants him back.
