The students were helped by mentors from the NASCAR legend Richard PettyPetty’s Garage band and founder of Choppers Inc. Billy Lane.

“It’s been really fun watching students over the last eight months create rat go-karts out of nothing,” Lane said. “Watching their skills and confidence grow each month has been a rewarding experience, and I can’t wait to see the last of the karts and drive them around the fairgrounds.”

The Rat Rod Kart Kit is part of the Tools for the Trades™ program from Northern Tool + Equipment. The program aims to spark growing interest in crafts among high school students through donations of tools and equipment to career and technical education programs. The donations will provide instructors with professional tools and equipment to properly teach the craft, as well as enable students to gain career-like experiences.

“Watching kids work on these go-karts with their own hands is what this compilation is all about,” Petty said. “It’s not about winning or losing. The idea is that these students will learn valuable, practical skills that could one day help them find a job in the trades.”

Karts with rats will be presented at 11:00 Polish time on FridayJune 21 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds during the MSRA’s 50th Anniversary “Back to the ’50s” weekend. Petty, Lane and the Petty’s Garage team, including NASCAR driver Thad Moffitt, will be on hand at the presentation to celebrate the completed karts.

“We know how valuable trades careers are to our communities, and that’s one of the reasons we created Tools for the Trades,” he said Suresh Krishna, CEO of Northern Tool + Equipment. “Most of the students involved in this redevelopment will pursue careers in trade after high school. We are thrilled to have been able to help fuel this fire.”
