“I don’t care about statistics”; Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is breaking his silence on setting an NBA record

After being demoralized, the Milwaukee Bucks dropped to 17-15 on the season 113-110 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night. It was a really frustrating match to see Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are as many as 24 points behind the Nets, who improved their record to just 13-21.

It was also the game in which Giannis, a two-time NBA MVP, set a up-to-date league record. He finished the night with 27 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, one steal and three blocks while shooting 12/24 from the field (but only 3/10 from the free throw line).

It was the 26th straight game in which the Greek Freak scored 20 or more points while shooting at least 50% from the field. This broke the previous record of 25 consecutive games with such statistics, which was shared by Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal and New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo just wants to win

After the loss to the Nets, Giannis had a lot to say about his disappointment that not everyone wanted to fight for the win after losing (again) by a wide margin.

When asked about his up-to-date NBA record, he completely ignored it.

“I didn’t know that,” Giannis said of Shaq and Williamson breaking the record. “I just want to win. I play to win. And this is my motto throughout the year: I will do everything, I don’t care about anything, I just try to remember that the only thing that matters is winning. And that’s what I managed to achieve this year and every time I step on the court I try to win.

“And when we lose, I don’t like it. In the next match I will try to go out on the field and win. I don’t care about accolades, I don’t care about statistics, I don’t care about percentages. I want to win.”

It’s no coincidence that while Giannis started the fourth quarter on the bench, the Bucks continued to trail the Nets. It was also no coincidence that when Milwaukee came back into the game, it went on a 20-0 run to get one point.

While the outcome of the game wasn’t what the Bucks and their fans expected, it was very inspiring to see Giannis basically get the team back in the game once again. Hopefully more players will start to accept his approach as many stars have lacked effort.

After all, there’s a reason why Pat Connaughton and MarJon Beauchamp, the two least-played players on the roster, saw significant minutes in the fourth quarter on Thursday night.
