“I don’t hate it”; Milwaukee Brewers fans react to 1B/OF Playoff Hero re-signing

The Milwaukee Brewers may have already completed their 40-man roster, which means they can’t sign any Major League free agents without first designating someone for assignment. However, they can still sign minor league free agents and invite them to spring training. These players can earn a spot on the 40-man roster through their play if current members perform poorly.

And that’s exactly what the Brewers did on Monday. According to Adam McCalvy, Milwaukee has agreed to a minor league contract Jake Bauerwho spent the 2024 season in Milwaukee:

The Brewers previously acquired Bauers in a trade with New York Yankees last offseason. In return, they sent minor leaguers Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez to New York.

Jake Bauers has spent a lot of time playing for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024.

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers (9) singles during the third inning of a wild-card playoff game against the New York Mets on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Bauers was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the seventh round of the 2013 amateur draft. Before arriving in Milwaukee in November 2023, he was involved in several trades involving other former Brewers players.

In 2014, the Padres combined him and Joe Ross in a three-team trade that sent Trea Turner to the Washington Nationals. Bauers went to the Tampa Bay Rays and Ross ended up in Washington.

In 2018, the Rays included him in a three-team trade that sent both he and Carlos Santana to the Cleveland Guardians.

After arriving in Milwaukee, Bauers played in a career-best 116 games and hit .199/.301/.361 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI and 13 stolen bases. He played first base and various outfield positions and pitched in four games.

Milwaukee Brewers fans react positively to Jake Bauers re-signing

While Bauers didn’t produce much at the plate, he did provide Milwaukee with one of the few postseason fireworks during their series with the New York Mets. His solo home run in Game 3 put the Brewers up 1-0, and they ultimately lost the game when Williams gave up the winning three-run home run to Pete Alonso.

Given his playoff success and ability to play multiple positions, Brewers fans responded positively to his re-signing:

For his career, Bauers is a .208/.302/.361 hitter with 51 home runs and 183 RBI.
