After two seasons of NCAA baseball, Jared Koenig began playing in the independent leagues from 2017-2019. He also played in New Zealand in 2019 and eventually took his first shot at affiliated ball by signing a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics. The A’s gave him a chance to play in the MLB in 2022, but he then committed to the San Diego Padres organization and then eventually the Milwaukee Brewers.

In a recent publication in The New Zealand Herald: Jared Koenig reflects on his journey to the massive leaguesincluding a low stay in New Zealand, where he says: “I was the one who took this (opportunity).” Koenig also said of the experience: “I think I learned a lot more about myself. I know that even if I’m chasing something, I had to go to another country to get that opportunity, but I think I’ve learned that I can go and do it and have fun and still get my job done.

Last season, Jared Koenig appeared in 55 games and posted an impressive ERA of 2.47, which included six starts. Of those six starts, four came in series in which he was used as an opener in consecutive games against the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. He also played in various roles, from round 4 to 11. Koenig reflected on his role in 2024, saying, “I don’t know how many other pitchers have done that.”
