Impact: How Wisconsin football benefits from fresh career compensation model

In a recent turn of events, the Wisconsin football program received a piece of news that could potentially change its NIL spending.

Starting in 2025, this will be available to all NCAA programs pay players directly through the school, giving players a portion of the program’s revenue. Previously, programs had to operate through “collectives”, which in turn paid NIL funds to players. With an incredibly robust fan base and one of highest annual revenues in an expanded conference, Wisconsin football could really benefit from some fresh NIL rule changes.

In a recent announcement, the NCAA ended three ongoing antitrust lawsuits after agreeing to a settlement. As part of the settlement, the NCAA agreed to “Professional remuneration model‘, which will come into force in 2025. The model will allow programs to share up to $20 million annually with players, which will come directly from program revenues.

Going forward, programs will do this pay players directly through the athletic department following a decision that affected the NCAA and representatives from all Power-Five conferences. This rule is expected to be widely adopted in the future, but will likely not come into force until 2025 at the earliest due to ongoing agreements and contracts.

This fresh rule comes after the introduction of NIL payments in 2021, which does not yet have any real regulation. As NIL payments become prohibitively costly and programs are willing to spend whatever it takes to attract specific recruits, a fresh payment model should provide stability to the currently unregulated mess.

With the emergence of mass news, many programs may now once again have a good chance of financially paying players to join their team. All reports indicate that the Wisconsin football program ranks among the highest revenue-generating programs in the United States Big Ten Conference, which facilitated several lucrative NIL deals. Wisconsin is also one of the top programs at paying players NIL once they arrive on campus.

In other words, Wisconsin football wasn’t paying to bring players into the program, but rather to keep them in Madison. New changes to college payment options may now allow Wisconsin football to have a fair shot at hiring high-end recruits because programs will no longer allow upfront contract negotiations. The professional game model will require programs to pay athletes from their revenues and prevent them from competing for available recruits.

With major changes coming, will the identity of college football change?

While many college football fans would like to avoid paying players directly to play at the amateur level, a professional compensation model appears to be the fairest way to compensate players reasonably. NIL collectives and sponsorships were great ideas, but they created a huge disparity in pay between top players and players who didn’t touch the field. The fresh model, which will go into effect in 2025, will allow players to receive money directly from the revenue they generate for their school.
