Lions sign former Packers K Greg Joseph to practice squad

The Detroit Lions on Wednesday signed former Green Bay Packers kicker Greg Joseph to the team’s practice squad.

Joseph, who was the Minnesota Vikings’ kicker for the past three seasons, spent one day on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster before being replaced by Brayden Narveson, who was acquired on waivers from the Tennessee Titans following final cuts. Joseph competed with Anders Carlson, the current one, for the Packers’ kicker position at the start of 2024, but both struggled with consistency and ultimately lost their jobs in Green Bay.

Oddly enough, the Lions had Joseph and Carlson at practice Tuesday. Detroit selected Joseph over Carlson for a spot on the practice squad.

Current Lions kicker Jake Bates scored both of his field goals and attempted extra points in Week 1. It’s possible Joseph will serve as more of a mentor to Bates, a rookie who found success in the UFL.

Speaking of rookies, Narveson made 3 of 4 field goals and both extra points in the Packers’ opener. He made three field goals from under 40 yards out and missed a 43-yarder. Narveson was one of only five kickers to miss a field goal in Week 1.

Joseph made 24 of 30 field goals (80%) for the Vikings last season. His field goal percentage ranked 28th among 33 qualifying kickers in 2023.
