Sustainability has been a pillar of the farm since AV’s great-great-grandfather started farming. For Roth Feeder pigs, it goes beyond caring for the land. They apply cover crops and no-till practices to preserve the soil in the rolling hills of Wisconsin’s driftless region.

AV stated that sustainability means being able to pass the farm down from generation to generation. AV wants to pass on the profitable farm to his children and their children.

AV said caring for the people and animals he works with is just as vital as caring for the earth.

Taking care of people and treating them well translates into exceptional care for animals. The core value underlying the team’s success is the care and safety of animals. Animals that are well cared for are elated, fit and often require little or no treatment or antibiotics. The apply of antibiotics in pig production has decreased by over 30%, reducing costs for the farmer while promoting animal welfare.

Pork producers across the country are proud to produce more pork than ever before with fewer inputs. Pig production uses 25% less water than 20 years ago. AV attributes the reduction in water apply on his farm to improved facility management and watering system design. They apply a nippy chamber ventilation system to keep the pigs nippy in the summer, requiring less water than a sprinkler system and keeping the pigs even more comfortable.

“We are learning what we need to do to help the environment and the community,” he told AV. “I can’t wait for the next 20 years.”
