There are three major dates for the Milwaukee Brewers during the week of November 18th. November 19 decisions will be made on Tuesday regarding which Rule 5-eligible players to add to the 40-man roster. On the same day, Willy Adames must also decide whether to accept or reject a qualifying offer. A few days later, on Friday, November 22, the deadline for submitting offers expires.
Which Rule 5 draft-eligible players could the Milwaukee Brewers add to their 40-man roster?
There are certain rules in baseball that potentially allow Minor League players to be drafted by outside organizations (rule 5 selection). The age at which they were signed plays a key role here. There are several Milwaukee Brewers players eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft this year, but the ones that stand out are Logan Henderson, Chad Patrick, Shane Smith, Coleman Crow and Wes Clarke. The full list of eligible players is available courtesy of Jim Goulart of Brewers Fanatic found here.
Willy Adames must make a formal decision regarding the qualifying offer
Earlier this month, the Brewers, unsurprisingly, extended the qualifying offer to Willy Adames. The qualifying offer is a one-year contract worth $21.05 million. This is essentially a guarantee that Adams will reject the offer, but by extending it, Milwaukee will gain protection because if he signs a long-term deal elsewhere this winter, he will receive draft pick compensation in return.
Preview of the deadline for submitting offers
Friday is the deadline by which teams must formally offer (tender) contracts for the upcoming season to unsigned players. The term primarily applies to arbitration-eligible players, which this year include: Devin Williams, William Contreras, Joel Payamps, Trevor Megill, Hoby Milner, Aaron Civale, Eric Haase and Nick Mears. At the beginning of November, we identified two potential candidates who will not participate in the tender.
